Key takeaways

  • Sported suits grassroots sports clubs and community groups, especially those in deprived or underserved communities and those with little experience of applying for funding.
  • For the Community Grants Programme, the organisation's mission and impact in its community are the main decision factors, and priority goes to groups it has not funded before.
  • The Community Grants Programme states up to £25,000 and Cash4Clubs states £2,000, with larger Cash4Clubs grants of £10,000, so a modest request fits its stated figures; the typical band, where about 8 in 10 grants fall between £2,500 and £495,000, is not a ceiling.
  • Deadlines vary by where you are based, so check the current round in its guidance before you write, and expect a decision about 6 weeks after the application submission deadline.
  • Cash4Clubs excludes any organisation with young people under 18 in its membership or activities, and the Community Grants Programme excludes schools, statutory bodies, profit-making companies, sole traders, individuals, groups with turnover over £1,000,000, and groups not based in and delivering in England, Scotland or Wales.

Overview

Sported is a charity registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales (charity number 1123313).

Sported exists to make sure no-one is left on the sidelines, so that everyone and every community has the opportunity to thrive through sport. It turns grassroots sport into a tool for preventing social challenges by equipping community groups with funding, expertise and volunteer support. Across six programmes it distributed a total of £1.57m in grants to 1,233 community groups. Its Cash4Clubs grant programme provides £2,000 to help adults stay or get active.

What they fund

Priority Areas

Sported funds grassroots sports clubs and community organisations across the UK, particularly groups that are overlooked by traditional funding and those in deprived or underserved communities. It supports sport and physical activity as a means of helping people and communities thrive, with grants broadly unrestricted and focused on outcomes so organisations can decide how best to use the funding. It places applicants at the centre of grant-making, aims to reduce barriers through simplified applications and proportionate due diligence, and supports groups that have little funding experience. Its grantmaking is accompanied by capacity-building, practical expertise, training and volunteer support to help community groups become more sustainable, inclusive and effective.
