Key takeaways

  • The work fits best if it is mathematical research, mathematics education, collaboration with industry or student mathematics activity, as its listed themes show.
  • Keep requests modest: the Small Grant Scheme gives up to £600 to individuals and up to £1,200 to enable an event, and University Liaison Grants go up to £400, or £200 without a named full-time academic member of the IMA.
  • Applicants to the Small Grant Scheme must be IMA members, and eStudent members cannot apply, so anyone without membership should not apply to that scheme.
  • Applications are accepted on a rolling basis with a decision in about six weeks, and the published rounds open on 1 February and 1 August, so plan around those dates.
  • The Institute judges scientific quality, impact, interdisciplinary links and community engagement, and conference bids need a rough budget, other funding sought and proper consideration of gender balance.

Overview

Institute of Mathematics and its Applications is a charity registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales (charity number 1017777).

The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications promotes and supports understanding, teaching, research and applications of mathematics. Its annual giving was £41,169. Its Small Grants Scheme has a budget of £16,000, and it also runs University Liaison Grants for university student mathematical societies. It administers support for the QJMAM Fund for Applied Mathematics, which backs UK research in applied mathematics and theoretical mechanics.

What they fund

Priority Areas

The IMA’s Small Grant Scheme supports research activity in all areas of applicable mathematics. It particularly welcomes contributions to workshops, small conferences and symposia, travel for overseas visitors, collaborative research, education and training for students and young mathematicians and scientists, and joint research between mathematicians and industry. Awards are competitive and should make a significant impact on, or contribute to, the specified research activity. Separately, University Liaison Grants give university student mathematical societies support for activities that enhance their programmes for members and promote mathematics, including mathematical talks, careers, networking and quizzes. The Institute assesses overall merit, the effectiveness of its grant and wider benefits.

Themes

  • Mathematical research
  • Mathematics education
  • Collaborative research
  • Mathematics-industry collaboration
  • Student mathematics activities

What they don't fund

  • Small Grant Scheme only:
    • Applicants must be IMA members
    • eStudent members are not eligible to apply
    • The foundation does not normally fund conference attendance only
    • The foundation is unlikely to fund activities for which substantial alternative funding sources currently exist
    • The foundation would not normally fund more than one application per year per applicant
    • The foundation does not fund retrospectively for events that have already taken place
  • IMA University Liaison Grants Scheme only:
    • The foundation does not fund speaker fees
    • The foundation does not fund more than half of the grant for logo clothing costs
    • The foundation does not fund more than £80 of the IMA grant for events such as Balls in any one year
  • QJMAM Fund for Applied Mathematics only:
    • The foundation does not fund events that have already taken place
    • The foundation funds conferences or workshops only when they are to be held in the UK
    • The foundation funds conference travel only for participants based in the UK
    • The foundation funds short research visits from or to the UK, or within the UK

How to apply

For University Liaison Grants, complete the form and email it to the Skills & EDI Officer. Following approval, the IMA sends confirmation authorising an invoice for payment.

Application windows:

  • Round 1: Opens 1st February and closes at midnight 28th February
  • Round 2: Opens 1st August and closes at midnight on 31st August

Who can apply:

  • University Liaison Grants Scheme
    • Undergraduate maths societies, postgraduate maths societies and mixed student maths societies are eligible to apply.
    • To qualify for the full £400, we do require that you supply the name of a full-time academic staff member who is a member of the IMA (with their permission). If this is not possible, the grant is limited to £200.

What to send:

  • Small Grant Scheme
    • For applications to present at a conference, provide a rough budget and indicate other sources of funding being sought or received.
    • For conference funding, provide information about the conference and proposed presentation.
  • University Liaison Grants Scheme: Supply the name of a full-time academic staff member who is a member of the IMA, with their permission, to qualify for the full grant.

Applying again: Small Grant Scheme: Applications may be made at any time but we would not normally expect to fund more than one application per year per applicant.

Application success factors

What the charity says:

  • The IMA Research Group assesses the overall merit of proposed activities, including scientific quality, training and wider benefits.
  • The Research Group considers how useful and effective the IMA Small Grant will be to the proposal’s success.
  • Projects that encourage the generation of impact or knowledge transfer are particularly welcomed.
  • Interdisciplinary projects forging links with other branches of science are particularly welcomed.
  • Projects that capture engagement with the wider community are particularly welcomed.
  • Conference applicants are required to give proper consideration to gender balance.
  • University Liaison applicants provide the name of a full-time academic staff member who is an IMA member to qualify for the full grant.
