Overview

The Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA) was founded in 2002 by Bert E. Brodsky after caring for his mother Anne, who lived with Alzheimer's disease from 1980-92. AFA's mission is to provide support, services, and education to individuals, families, and caregivers affected by Alzheimer's disease and related dementias nationwide, and to fund research for better treatment and a cure. With 2023 revenue of nearly $17 million, AFA maintains Charity Navigator's highest rating of four stars, with 84% of funds going directly to programs and services. The organization has grown significantly under President & CEO Charles J. Fuschillo Jr. (appointed 2014), now uniting more than 2,000 member organizations across all 50 states. AFA's network includes grassroots Alzheimer's agencies, senior centers, adult daycare centers, home healthcare agencies, long-term care residences, research facilities, and other dementia-related groups.

Governance and Leadership

Founder & Board Chair: Bert E. Brodsky

  • Founded AFA in 2002 after caring for his mother with Alzheimer's
  • "It took years for me to realize the scope of what was happening and how to deal with it. There was nowhere to turn with questions, no resources for support and very little regard for how the disease affects not just the individual, but their family as well."

President & CEO: Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr.

  • Appointed in 2014
  • Transformed AFA into a national leader in dementia care
  • Expanded programs, strengthened services, and increased revenue
  • Launched innovative initiatives including Virtual Helpline Assistant and National Memory Screening Program
  • "Every dollar invested in Alzheimer's research is an investment in hope"
  • Advocates that Alzheimer's disease should be declared a national epidemic, noting it costs the nation $290 billion annually to care for those with Alzheimer's and related dementia

  • Emphasize innovation and creativity: Particularly for the $25,000 Innovation Grant, demonstrate unique approaches to dementia care
  • Demonstrate community need: Use local demographics and data to show gaps in services and resources
  • Highlight caregiver impact: AFA prioritizes programs that provide "much-needed time-out" for caregivers while supporting individuals with dementia
  • Show efficient resource use: With 84% of AFA's funds going to programs, they value efficiency and direct service delivery
  • Submit electronically by deadline: All applications are submitted via email to grants@alzfdn.org; late submissions are not accepted
  • Consider multiple grant opportunities: With four different grant programs throughout the year, strategic organizations can apply for different grants at different times
