Ryan Foundation

• Ryan Foundation funds charitable, religious, scientific and educational work in Texas, with particular emphasis on Tarrant County and Fort Worth, covering health care, human and social services, education, children services and the arts; out-of-state endeavors, professional conferences and symposia, and individuals are not funded.
• A modest request fits best: about eight in ten grants fall between $5,000 and $75,000, the median grant is $25,000, and half of all grants are $25,000 or less, though the largest grant made was $2,000,000.
• Organisations that have not previously received funding should first send a brief, one-page letter of inquiry before submitting a full grant request, and the Board considers requests four times a year, with fixed deadlines of 1 February, 1 May, 1 August and 1 November at noon; the Foundation encourages applications submitted before the deadline day itself.
• It discourages pre-application meetings and prefers to schedule any needed meeting only after receiving a written application, so grant writers should set out their case in writing rather than seek an introductory chat.
• Just over half of grant dollars have gone to organisations also funded in the two preceding filings, suggesting a leaning toward continuing relationships, though organisations new to the Foundation can still apply via the letter of inquiry route.
