Key takeaways

  • MS International Federation works worldwide, through its member organisations, so a request fits best if it is clearly about MS research, organisational capacity, advocacy or awareness.
  • The annual report says about 8 in 10 of its 13 grants to organisations fall between £3,000 and £17,000, with a median of £3,900, so a request in that region is typical, though the largest grant was about £41,000 and that band is not a ceiling.
  • It does not accept unsolicited requests and gives grants by invitation only, so a cold proposal is unlikely to be considered.
  • Project and activity grants come through calls for applications and are decided through a competitive process, so watch for a call, and note that the Du Pré Grants are currently paused.
  • Grants go to registered MS organisations and to service providers or consultants working with them, so an organisation without a link to MS work should not expect to qualify.

Overview

MS International Federation is a charity registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales (charity number 1105321).

MS International Federation exists to improve the quality of life and wellbeing of everybody affected by MS and to end MS forever. It works with and through its member organisations to strengthen the global MS movement, advance research and improve access to treatment, care, information and support. Its annual giving was £174,571, and its programmes include movement building grants of £500 to £5,000, project and activity grants, and McDonald Fellowships, which fund 2-year research placements for early career researchers from low- and middle-income countries.

What they fund

Priority Areas

MSIF works with and through its member organisations to strengthen the global MS movement, advance research and improve access to treatment, care, information and support for people affected by MS. Its movement-building grants support emerging organisations, or their representatives, in countries where economic conditions and the development of civil society structures can make organisational growth more challenging. Grants go to registered MS organisations and to service providers or consultants working with them; where the grant remit requires, emerging MS support structures may receive seed grants for essential organisational capacity. Project and activity grants support time-limited work, including travel to meetings and training, materials, training opportunities, awareness-raising and advocacy. The Federation also funds research placements for multiple sclerosis researchers and clinicians at established research centres and clinics.
