Keep Wales Tidy
At a glance
Key takeaways
- Keep Wales Tidy suits projects in Wales that transform green spaces, gardens or orchards with strong community involvement, and its Garden Packages are open to community groups, schools, the NHS, third-sector organisations and others.
- Individuals, private gardens and private-sector organisations are excluded, as are sites that are Sites of Special Scientific Interest, Local Nature Reserves or species-rich areas, or that contain protected species.
- The annual report gives no grant range, and support comes as pre-paid packages of plants, tools and materials, so ask for a package rather than a cash sum.
- Before you apply, have written landowner permission, a constitution or charity number, and a commitment to maintain the site for five years with a plan for future upkeep, and note that schools must include volunteers from the wider community.
- Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but the form cannot be saved once started, so prepare your documents first.
Overview
Keep Wales Tidy is a charity registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales (charity number 1082058).
Keep Wales Tidy is a charity that exists to protect, preserve and enhance the environment of Wales for current and future generations. It works through education, advocacy and community action to help people understand their natural environment and take practical steps to protect it. Its Local Places for Nature programme offers pre-paid packages, from small gardening projects to orchards and large-scale makeovers, that transform underused spaces into community habitats.
What they fund
Priority Areas
Keep Wales Tidy works with local communities across Wales to protect the environment, supported by education, advocacy and practical community action. Its wider work addresses litter and waste, empowers young people, creates and restores green spaces, and sets standards for environmental excellence. One route for organisations is Local Places for Nature: groups and organisations can apply for pre-paid packages for garden projects, orchards and larger transformations, with plants, tools and materials supplied. The programme gives priority to strong community involvement and projects in towns, cities, deprived areas or spaces with little access to nature, and welcomes underrepresented groups. Garden Packages are for organisations with land in not-for-profit ownership and applications are open to community groups, schools, public bodies and third-sector organisations.

- The programme prioritises urban, peri-urban or rural town locations, community or volunteer involvement, disadvantaged communities and places with high deprivation or little access to nature.
- Applications involving Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic and/or disabled participants receive priority.
- The panel may prioritise sites connected to another nature site or more than 200m from green space or a watercourse.
- Applicants should demonstrate wide community involvement, with at least five regular volunteers and organisations able to access the garden.
- The programme gives priority to applications meeting at least three of its key scheme criteria.
- The panel seeks to award packages across a broad range of locations, partners and organisations to trial and monitor different approaches.
