Overview
Goodnews Evangelical Mission (GEM) was originally established in 1997 by Giles Wilkins and Roland Van Wyk for the purpose of providing a local befriending ministry in Eastbourne, East Sussex. Upon Giles Wilkins' death in 2007, GEM received a substantial legacy from his estate which the trustees invested, enabling the trust to substantially expand the scope and sphere of its operations. GEM is now a Christian grant-making charity that supports other Christian charities both in the UK and abroad. The charity's registered objects are to advance the Christian religion, to relieve poverty and sickness, and such other charitable purposes as the trustees may from time to time decide. The charity is overseen by a board of five Christian trustees who meet six times a year to consider funding applications.
Funding Priorities
Grant Programs
GEM operates a rolling grant application process with fixed decision rounds:
- Applications are reviewed at trustee meetings held six times per year
- Online application system requiring registration and login
- All funding applications must be underpinned by a clear Christian ethos and a desire to promote the Christian faith
Priority Areas
GEM supports Christian charities and projects in the following areas:
- Advocacy, Evangelism, Outreach & Discipleship
- Befriending
- Chaplaincy, Pastoral & Counselling
- Children & Youth Work
- Events
- Humanitarian Aid / Disaster Relief
- Resources (Bibles, Literature, Courses, Translation)
The charity particularly supports:
- Projects seeking to alleviate poverty and bring Christian teaching to families and children in South Africa, India, and other deprived areas of the world
- Projects which alleviate loneliness in the elderly, disabled and socially isolated locally and within the wider UK
What They Don't Fund
- Organizations without a clear Christian ethos
- Non-registered charities (UK applicants must be registered with the Charity Commissions of England and Wales, Scotland and Ireland; international applicants must be registered charities or NGOs in their own country)
