EuroELSO Associates is a charity registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales. It exists to advance education, in particular among scientists and medical professionals throughout Europe, in extracorporeal life support techniques for failing organ systems. Its objects also cover developing and evaluating novel therapies, maintaining a registry, supporting clinical research and providing educational programmes to relieve critical illness across Europe. Its EuroELSO Grant Programme enables healthcare professionals and scientists to undertake research or develop educational content. The charity's annual congress was attended by 1,724 people and 240 faculty, and four grants totalling 70,000 EUR were awarded and fully executed.

The work covers development and evaluation of novel extracorporeal therapies for severe respiratory or cardiac failure, using registry data for clinical research, and education for medical professionals and lay communities. It is designed for projects completed within the available budget or for generating preliminary data to pump-prime applications to other funders. A hospital or university host should be an active ELSO centre in the European chapter or affiliated with one. Projects should be performed within a maximum 18-month period.

Who can apply:

  • Applications will be accepted from any healthcare professional (including physicians, nurses, perfusionists, and therapists) or a research scientist.
  • The host institution should be a hospital or university.
  • The host institution should be an active ELSO centre in the European chapter (EuroELSO) or be affiliated with one.

  • Complete the application form, covering the project title, lay summary of project, lead applicant and their qualifications, host institution, affiliated ECMO centre (if not the host institution), and co-applicant(s).
  • The proposal should include the healthcare/educational need, background, specific questions or aims, detailed project plan, expected value of results, and resources request.
  • The signature page indicating approval of the EuroELSO centre’s director, departmental director of the host institution, and the host institution’s finance officer must be received within fourteen calendar days of the closing date.
  • For research that includes human subjects, appropriate evidence of Research Ethical Committee approval should be shared with EuroELSO.
  • Applicants proposing animal use should provide detailed descriptions of the experimental design.

Applying again: EuroELSO Grant Programme: A failure to present an abstract within 2 years could penalize future applications from the candidate’s research team.
